About Update and Recovery files If you ever happen to want to switch your harddrive for any reasons be aware that there is a difference between normal update files and recovery files. For a clean new hard drive you need to grab a recovery file otherwise the system restore will fail.

21 Οκτ 2013 · How can I use a PS3UPDAT.PUP file downloaded from the Playstation System Software site to update my PS3? Copying it to the root of a USB flash drive doesn't seem sufficient. Does it need to be in a particular path?
You might have to update it because a lot of games won't work on older OFW. You can jailbreak it, but it would have to be updated to a jailbreakable firmware. Once done, you can then downgrade it to pretty much any OFW. Just don't go to low because some older OFW don't have recovery mode.
