26 Σεπ 2008 · When you save the file locally, the difference doesn't matter - your local system will likely treat the two file extensions as interchangeable for loading by your browser. The reason for it is that historically Windows-based systems used 3 letter extensions (htm) and Unix-based systems the 4 letters (html).
Both .htm and .html are exactly the same and will work in the same way. The choice is down to personal preference, provided you’re consistent with your file naming you won’t have a problem with either. Depending on the configuration of the web server, one of the file types will take precedence over the other.

This follows the conventions established by the 8.3 naming restriction in the FAT file system, but there is no technical reason for a three character limit on modern file systems.

I want to have a local html file that I can edit as needed. Then windows should show that file as the background for the desktop but I should be able to click on links and interact with the page. Certain links would launch certain programs.
26 Δεκ 2019 · The reason we don’t use .htm very much and use .html instead is because the internet mostly runs on servers that allow 4 letter file extensions, and html stands for hypertext markup language. The only reason .htm even exists is because early DOS and Windows systems couldn’t handle the full .html file extension.
There is absolutely no difference between .html and .htm files. They can be used interchangeably. Thus, you can rename a .html file to .htm and vice versa and the browser program will display it the same way. The only difference is the file extension.
