This validator checks the markup validity of Web documents in HTML, XHTML, SMIL, MathML, etc. If you wish to validate specific content such as RSS/Atom feeds or CSS stylesheets, MobileOK content, or to find broken links, there are other validators and tools available.
This validator can process documents written in most markup languages. Supported document types include the HTML (through HTML 4.01) and XHTML (1.0 and 1.1) family, MathML, SMIL and SVG (1.0 and 1.1, including the mobile profiles).
The Markup Validator is a free tool and service that validates markup: in other words, it checks the syntax of Web documents, written in formats such as (X)HTML. The Validator is sort of like lint for C. It compares your HTML document to the defined syntax of HTML and reports any discrepancies.

For programmatic checking of modern HTML documents, use the API provided by the W3C HTML Checker. To do that, call https://validator.w3.org/nu/ or the URL for another instance of the W3C HTML Checker, and consult the following documentation:

Updates: Added support for XHTML Basic 1.1, XHTML Mobile Profiles (1.0, 1.1 and 1.2) and the historical HTML i18n. Bug Fix: the validator won't override a given document type with itself. Conformance: The validator now warns about inconsistent public/system identifiers combinations.
