9 Οκτ 2024 · TSH levels higher than 4.5 mU/L usually indicate an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism), and low TSH levels—below 0.4 mU/L—indicate an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism). However, there are exceptions to these interpretations and variations as to what a "normal" TSH level is.

5 Σεπ 2023 · Tests measuring free T4 – either a free T4 (FT4) or free T4 index (FTI) – more accurately reflect how the thyroid gland is functioning when checked with a TSH. The finding of an elevated TSH and low FT4 or FTI indicates primary hypothyroidism due to disease in the thyroid gland.
3 Οκτ 2023 · Based on how high or low the different values are—including key hormones such as TSH and T4—the lab can determine which type of thyroid disease you have (hypothyroidism vs. hyperthyroidism) and narrow the possible causes.
10 Δεκ 2022 · If the results show that TSH is high and T-4 is low, then the diagnosis is hypothyroidism. In some cases, the thyroid hormone T-3 may be measured as well. If the second test shows high TSH but T-4 and T-3 are in the standard range, then the diagnosis is a condition called subclinical hypothyroidism.
3 Οκτ 2022 · Having high TSH and low T4 levels usually indicates hypothyroidism, an underactive thyroid due to a primary thyroid problem. This is a lack of T4 production due to an issue with your thyroid that’s causing your pituitary gland to release excess TSH to try to stimulate your thyroid into making more T4.
22 Ιαν 2024 · Central Hypothyroidism: both TSH and free T4 levels are low, indicating a normally functioning thyroid that’s responding appropriately to reduced TSH. The underlying issue is with the pituitary gland, which fails to increase TSH production in response to low T4.
A high level of TSH and a low level of T4 in the blood could mean you have an underactive thyroid. If your test results show raised TSH but normal T4, you may be at risk of developing an underactive thyroid in the future.
