20 Οκτ 2023 · New Jersey Colony for APUSH is defined as one of the original 13 American colonies established by European settlers during the 17th century. It began as a Proprietary Colony granted to Lord Berkeley and Sir George Carteret in 1664, with the land eventually divided into East Jersey and West Jersey.
Life in Colonial New Jersey focused on the family, religion and the father's business or occupation. Unlike families in some of the other original 13 colonies who had to worry about hostile Indians, families in New Jersey maintained a peaceful coexistence with the local Lenni-Lenape.
European colonization of New Jersey started soon after the 1609 exploration of its coast and bays by Henry Hudson. Dutch and Swedish colonists settled parts of the present-day state as New Netherland and New Sweden. In 1664, the entire area, surrendered by the Dutch to England, gained its current name.
Money in Colonial Times. A shortage of money was a problem for the American colonies. England did not supply its colonies with sufficient coinage and prohibited them from making their own. The early settlers brought coins from Europe but they went quickly back there to pay for supplies.

Settlements were sparse and scattered, yet New Jersey's highways were the best in the colonies due to the area's location between New York and Philadelphia, and between the northern and southern colonies. West New Jersey served as a haven for persecuted English, Irish, Welsh, and Scottish Quakers.
