Iao Valley State Monument, nestled in Maui's verdant embrace, showcases the iconic ʻIao Needle amidst serrated peaks, a cultural landmark steeped in Hawaiian history and mythology.
1 Μαΐ 2023 · The 'Iao Needle is surrounded by a very lovely walkway and garden of lush tropical plants. Surrounded on all sides by the Pu'u Kukui Crater, it was the site of one of the most famous battles in Hawaiian history.
There is a labyrinth of winding paved paths that wander through the lush vegetation, flirting with the ‘Iao Stream which winds below the famed spired needle. It’s a gently challenging 133 steps up to the lookout for your reward – a magnificent 360 degree view of Maui!
Located in Central Maui just west of Wailuku, this peaceful 4,000-acre, 10-mile long park is home to one of Maui's most recognizable landmarks, the 1,200-foot ʻĪao Needle. This iconic green-mantled rock outcropping overlooks ʻĪao stream and is an ideal attraction for easy hiking and sightseeing.
Plan to spend at least 1 to 3 hours to see the whole ʻĪao Valley State Monument. This will give you time to walk the paved trails, see the Iao Needle, and visit the Kepaniwai Park Heritage Gardens. If you’re hiking longer trails, add more time accordingly.
