Key Ideas & Accomplishments. Neoclassical art arose in opposition to the overly decorative and gaudy styles of Rococo and Baroque that were infusing society with a vanity art culture based on personal conceits and whimsy.
Neoclassical literature was distinguished by its focus on order, rationality, and moral purpose. Writers aimed to uphold classical ideals of clarity, balance, and structure in their work. Themes often included social satire, moral instruction, and the exploration of human nature.
Neoclassicism is characterized by clarity of form, sober colors, shallow space, strong horizontal and verticals that render that subject matter timeless (instead of temporal as in the dynamic Baroque works), and classical subject matter (or classicizing contemporary subject matter).
