Body armor is a ballistic-resistant vest that is made up of a carrier and soft armor panels or hard armor plates. NIJ encourages law enforcement agencies to select body armor that their oficers will wear and that is consistent with their ballistic protection requirements.

Level III armor is rated to stop 7.62x51mm NATO M80 ball ammo, while Level IV can stop .30-06 M2 AP "black tip" armor piercing rounds.
