The Colilert-18 test uses a proprietary Defined Substrate Technology (DST) nutrient indicators ONPG and MUG to detect coliforms and E. coli. Coliforms use their β-galactosidase enzyme to metabolize ONPG and change it from colorless to yellow.
The Colilert Test uses proprietary Defined Substrate Technology (DST) to simultaneously detect total coliforms and E. coli. Two nutrient-indicators, ONPG and MUG, are the major sources of carbon in Colilert and can be metabolised by the coliform enzyme β-galactosidase and the E. coli enzyme β-glucuronidase, respectively.
Overview. Easy. No media preparation. No pipetting. No dilutions (for counts up to 200 with Quanti-Tray; 2,419 with Quanti-Tray/2000; and up to 2,272 with Quanti-Tray/Legiolert). Rapid. Less than 1 minute of hands-on time. Results in 24 hours or less (7 days for Legiolert). No confirmation necessary. Accurate.

Colilert-18 can be used for detecting E. coli in marine waters (not for total coliforms, unless evaluated by the specific site). Make at least a 1:10 dilution
IDEXX Colilert 18 for Coliform and e.Coli Detection simultaneously detects both total coliforms and e.Coli in water, or faecal coliforms in waste-water, with results in 18 hours. With the Colilert-18 Test, you can read afternoon samples the next morning - before the next day's samples arrive.
