When people see our winterberry hollies (Ilex verticillata), they’re immediately intrigued. It’s no wonder: these native shrubs are stunningly beautiful at the dreariest time of the year.
Adding color to the winter landscape, Ilex verticillata (Winterberry) is a slow-growing, multi-stemmed, deciduous shrub of upright-rounded habit. It produces an abundance of small, inconspicuous, greenish-white flowers in late spring or early summer.
Ilex verticillata, the winterberry, is a species of holly native to eastern North America in the United States and southeast Canada, from Newfoundland west to Ontario and Minnesota, and south to Alabama.
The common name refers to the plant’s red berries that mature in the fall, providing winter interest and food for birds and small mammals. Winterberry holly requires moist, acidic soil with good drainage in deep or partial shade, or full sun. It tolerates heat, drought, and soil compaction.

This deciduous holly likes wetlands and its edges, so you want to ensure it has a source of moisture in well-drained soils or when rain is sparse, which is a factor in Hennepin and surrounding counties situated at the western boundary of this plant's native, largely wetter, range.
