13 Μαΐ 2020 · Our pilot study sought to engage students with a dynamic real-world problem in a way that could improve their academic experience. In particular, this study addresses three factors that the literature regards as important: Active learning, where students are encouraged to apply their knowledge to new situations (NSEE, Citation 2003).
Metzger and Langley’s (2020) study highlighted particular patterns of student engagement across 23 classes, including three forms of engagement (listening/processing, discussing, and problem solving) that explained 74% of all observed learning behaviors.
In short, external motivation plays a major role initially for encouraging students to engage and perform, in order to receive rewards. By stressing standards of performance, behavioural theory of motivation was also similar to achievement motivation theory in cognitive psychology.
