3 digit code is a separate verification number for the card itself - if you call customer service they'll ask for that code to verify that you physically have the card. Another layer of security. Doesn't AMEX tell you the 4 digit code is the equivalent of the CVV on other cards when you get the card? Probably but my husband opened the card.
