The total laryngectomy procedure involves the removal of all laryngeal structures and a section of the upper trachea, which leads to disconnection of the airway and a permanent breathing hole in the neck (tracheostoma).
30 Ιουλ 2020 · The surgeon widens (reconstructs) the airway by inserting precisely shaped pieces of cartilage (grafts) from the ribs, ear or thyroid into the trachea. A temporary tube inserted through the mouth or nose into the trachea (endotracheal tube) is put into place to support the cartilage grafts.
The most common incision is a low collar incision (Fig 2A). More distal exposure can be achieved by extending the incision and dividing the manubrium ( Fig 2 B). A small pediatric sternal retractor separates the manubrium.
