Buffington Island Battlefield is the site of the only significant Civil War battle in Ohio. On July 19, 1863, a Union force of 3,000 cavalry, artillery, infantry, and navy personnel routed a column of 1,800 Confederate cavalry and artillery commanded by Brigadier General John Hunt Morgan .
The John Hunt Morgan Heritage Trail follows the route of Confederate Brig. Gen. John Hunt Morgan’s daring and innovative Great Raid of 1863. This unique Ohio driving tour begins at Harrison and ends 557 miles later near West Point.
The attack occurred during Morgan's Raid in the American Civil War as a force of 2,500 cavalry invaded the North in support of the Tullahoma Campaign. It was the only pitched battle of the Civil War that occurred in Indiana, and no battle has occurred within Indiana since. [3]
The Battle of Corydon is listed along side Gettysburg as the only two civil war battle sites on northern soil. This park reminds us of our history and is also listed listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
