The Battle of Corydon was the only official Civil War battle in Indiana, and the battle site is the only one north of the Ohio River. The site commemorates the effort of Confederate Gen. John Hunt Morgan to spread the war to the north. The Corydon Battlefield is a five-acre park located on the east side of State Route 135, just south of Corydon.

This 4-acre memorial park is the site of the only significant Civil War battle on Ohio soil. 1/4 mile away is the spot where Major Daniel McCook, patriarch of the fighting McCook family, was mortally wounded in the Battle of Buffington Island.
The Civil War and Morgan’s Raid. In 1863, Confederate Army General Braxton Bragg ordered John Hunt Morgan to invade the North to draw the Union Army north into Kentucky and away from Chattanooga, Tennessee. On July 8, 1863, Morgan and his unit crossed the Ohio River into Indiana.

The Battle of Corydon is listed along side Gettysburg as the only two civil war battle sites on northern soil. This park reminds us of our history and is also listed listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The log cabin has been restored and is open Friday through Sunday (varying times) during the summer season.
Many Ohio counties have Civil War monuments, statues, cannons, and similar memorials of their contributions to the Civil War effort. These are frequently located near the county courthouses. The Ohio State Capitol has a display of Civil War guns on its grounds.
