I think it’s automatically worth it if because a lot of colleges offer scholarships specifically geared towards people in PTK. For example, the college I’m transferring to is giving me an extra 4K a year, so definitely has paid for itself.
Drawboard is the best pdf annotation software, hands down. Edge is good too. Also have a look at liquidtext, it has a fairly interesting feature set. If you want to take notes, but not necessarily on a pdf, then : OneNote is good, but notes are not stored locally by default. ScrbleInk is good.
I'm looking for a tool that allows compressing PDF files. I would like to find something free (open-source would be ideal), easy to use, that runs on Windows. Not a lot of features needed, compressing PDF and reducing their size is all we need. I understand Acrobat Pro does this.

It's legit. The guaranteed scholarships from PTK aren't so great, but many 4 year unis are affiliated with PTK and offer very generous scholarships themselves to PTK members. (About 80,000 in my case). There are other pretty solid "soft" benefits too.
