Initiate armour is white-plate, gold-trimmed plate armour that can be purchased from Sir Tiffy Cashien in Falador Park after completing Recruitment Drive, requiring 20 Defence and 10 Prayer to equip. The items have a small Prayer bonus equivalent to monk's robes and other bonuses equivalent to mithril armour.

Initiate and proselyte are amazing considering how cheap they are. Paladin could be a new better prayer armor with a much larger cost. Could have a different helm and a gold sara star in the middle of the pl8. Obtainable at the end of the quest line.
The main appeal of the initiate pure originally was the large prayer bonus the armour offers, and getting 52 prayer I would say is still a good idea, you won't be doing much pvm without prayer and with 20 defence either. Certain things are possible, most gwd can be done with minimal defence, and most things can be done if you are committed.
