23 Ιουλ 2019 · Scientists can’t literally look inside a planet, not even our own! But they still have ways of understanding what’s going on beneath its surface. In the case of the four rocky planets, seismometers and spacecraft have revealed many similarities and some important differences.
The four inner planets, or terrestrial planets, have solid, rocky surfaces. Earth, the third planet from the Sun, is the only planet with large amounts of liquid water, and the only planet known to support life.
The four planets nearest the Sun—Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars—are called inner planets. They are rocky planets about the size of Earth or somewhat smaller. Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune are called gas giants.
The solar system is also known as a planetary system. Since the 1990s scientists have found many planetary systems beyond our solar system. In these systems, one or more planets orbit a star—just as the eight planets in our solar system orbit the Sun. These planets are called extrasolar planets.
The inner planets, the closest to the Sun, are solid spheres of rock and include Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars. The inner planets were constantly bombarded by asteroids and meteorites during their first 600 million years in existence.
