If the light comes from the Sun (usually when it is near or even below the horizon), the phenomenon is called a sun pillar or solar pillar. Light pillars can also be caused by the Moon or terrestrial sources, such as streetlights and erupting volcanoes .
19 Οκτ 2023 · Sun pillars, sundogs, light pillars… all of these phenomena fall under a family called “halos”. They’re formed by the same factors, namely ice crystals, and light, but they differ in the way they refract or reflect the light.
Light pillars caused by the Sun are called Solar or Sun pillars, while those caused by the Moon’s light are called Lunar or Moon pillars. When the light source is the Sun, light pillars are usually seen when the Sun is near the horizon.

The ice crystals gradually falling to the ground bump into air particles, which slow them down and change their slope. If the crystal retains the correct symmetrical shape, the air makes the hexagons fall horizontally to the ground.

The Sun formed about 4.6 billion years ago in a giant, spinning cloud of gas and dust called the solar nebula. As the nebula collapsed under its own gravity, it spun faster and flattened into a disk.
