Catastrophe and Rebirth at Intel Malaysia On May 1, 1975, Intel’s assembly plant at Penang, Malaysia, was destroyed in a fire. The plant was closed at the time and no one was hurt, but rebuilding the facility while keeping production on track would present Intel with a daunting challenge.

28 Σεπ 2023 · In 1972, Intel opened a 5-acre assembly plant in Penang, the trading hub close to Malaysia’s northern tip. The assembly plant employed nearly a thousand people and soon became crucial to Intel’s semiconductor supply chain.
Intel's new Penang, Malaysia, facility arose out of a coconut grove in 1972. The first assembled parts were shipped from this plant in December. It is one of three Intel plants due for completion in 1973.
Intel has a strong presence in Malaysia, investing over US$5 billion since 1972 and employing over 15,000 people. The chip giant has earmarked another US$7 billion for the next ten years, mainly to increase the size of its operations in Penang and Kulim, Kedah.
Intel opened its first international manufacturing facility in 1972, in Malaysia, which would host multiple Intel operations, before opening assembly facilities and semiconductor plants in Singapore and Jerusalem in the early 1980s, and manufacturing and development centers in China, India, and Costa Rica in the 1990s.
