On May 1, 1975, Intel’s assembly plant at Penang, Malaysia, was destroyed in a fire. The plant was closed at the time and no one was hurt, but rebuilding the facility while keeping production on track would present Intel with a daunting challenge.

Intel Malaysia is celebrating its 50th anniversary next year. In May last year, Intel outlined its RISE programme, which will see it to 2030. “RISE” stands for responsible, inclusive, sustainable and enabling practices (see “Intel’s 2030 RISE strategy and corporate responsibility goals”).
Intel has a strong presence in Malaysia, investing over US$5 billion since 1972 and employing over 15,000 people. The chip giant has earmarked another US$7 billion for the next ten years, mainly to increase the size of its operations in Penang and Kulim, Kedah.
