The Chicago Bungalow is instantly recognizable once you know what to look for: Brick construction. One and one-half stories above a basement. Low-pitched hipped roof with wide overhangs. Because the California bungalows that inspired our own Chicago bungalows were envisioned by architects as seasonal vacation homes or mild-climate homes, they were constructed primarily of wood and stucco.
Unlike earlier single family residences, Chicago bungalows were designed for living "all on one floor." During the bungalow building boom, this efficient and economical floor plan provided well-built, yet inexpensive, housing options for families of virtually all income levels.
