A root (also known as root word or radical) is the core of a word that is irreducible into more meaningful elements. [1] In morphology, a root is a morphologically simple unit which can be left bare or to which a prefix or a suffix can attach.
Morphological: a word has an internal cohesion and is indivisible by other units; a word may be modiied only externally by the addition of suixes and preixes. Grammatical: words fall into particular classes. Syntactic: a word has external distribution or mobility; it is moved as a unit, not in parts.
Roots and meaning. Because roots are the main meaning-carrying parts of a word's structure, knowing their meaning and being able to identify them in words is an important tool for vocabulary learning and recall. Learning individual vocabulary words takes time, thought, and practice.
