31 Δεκ 2011 · IF you have a Muncie 318 3 speed, or the Muncie 319 3 speed with overdrive, those transmissions are the same length. Like squirrel said, roughly 27 inches including the bellhousing (same as a short shaft TH350).
3 Ιουν 2016 · The 1955 Bel Air I just bought has the 3-speed manual transmission with the column shift (three on the tree). It doesn't mesh well from neutral to either first or reverse. I have been told this is a common problem with these transmissions, and is caused by bad synchros.
The case will have its own casting number and should also have a casting date code - a letter (A-L) for the month, followed by 1 or 2 digits for the day and 1 or 2 digits for the year. All of this information will be cast into the case and not stamped.

27 Οκτ 2017 · If you’ve got a manual transmission, we’re assuming it’s a four speed, because (from what we can tell) Chevy dropped the base manual 3-speed after 1969. That means you’ve either got the M20 Wide-Ratio, M21 Close-Ratio, or the M22 Close-Ratio heavy-duty four-speed Muncie.
The manual 3-speed transmission was standard fare for most of the Chevelle lineup from 1964 thru 1972. Some exceptions include the 1970 with either the SS396 or SS454, the 1971 and 1972 SS with the 454 engine where the H.D. Muncie 4-speed or TH400 were the only transmission options available.
Due to the wide combination of id's, stampings, numbers, etc... varied and even GM couldn't keep track of what was what, it's best to ID your gearbox visually, taking what is stamped on the box FWIW. The best way to ID the transmission is to count teeth.
