Blepharospasm is when uncontrollable muscle twitches or spasms force your eyelids closed. When it’s severe, the spasms can be enough to keep you from seeing. While this condition is rare, it’s also very disruptive. Fortunately, this condition is treatable, and several approaches can help.

A blepharospasm is the involuntary closing of the eyelids. It happens because of involuntary contractions of the orbiculus oculi (the muscle responsible for closing the eyelids). It is one of the most common dystonias (abnormal movements) affecting the head and neck.
Other symptoms may include involuntary winking or squinting of one or both eyes, increasing difficulty in keeping the eyes open, and light sensitivity. Generally, the spasms occur during the day, disappear in sleep, and reappear after waking.
