There are scales for measuring different aspects of pain. For one patient, a pain might feel extremely hot, but not at all dull, while another patient may not experience any heat, but feel like their pain is very dull.
Labor is not a pain-free process, and pain-free labor is not a realistic outcome. Numerical pain scales lack the subjectivity needed to assess laboring women and often result in frequent narcotic administration. The CALM Scale offers a more efficient and descriptive measurement to assess and treat labor pain.
The PLPQ is a 31-item questionnaire that explores the “nature of labor pain,” “transcendence with labor pain, “preparation for labor pain,” and “internal/external factors of distress during labor pain.” It uses a Likert scale, where 1 is strongly disagree and 5 is strongly agree.
