Serum iron tests are indicated when the results from a complete blood count (CBC) indicate that your pet is anemic (decreased red blood cell numbers and/or decreased hemoglobin) and that the red blood cells are microcytic (smaller than usual) and hypochromic (contain less hemoglobin than usual).

Iron deficiency is the most common deficiency seen in dogs. It is rarely nutritional in origin—it most commonly occurs after blood loss (see Blood Loss Anemia). Young animals do not have much stored iron, and milk contains very little iron. Your veterinarian may recommend oral iron supplements for anemic newborns.
The most common test to diagnose anemia is the packed cell volume (PCV), also called the hematocrit (HCT). In a normal dog, 35% to 55% of the blood will be red blood cells.
