The irrelevant-speech effect refers to the finding of impaired recall performance in the presence of irrelevant auditory stimuli. Two broad classes of theories exist for the effect, both allowing automatic entry of the distracting sounds into the processing system but differing in how attention is involved.
1 Ιαν 2018 · The Irrelevant Sound Effect (ISE) is the finding that background sound impairs accuracy for visually presented serial recall tasks. Among various auditory backgrounds, speech typically acts as the strongest distractor.
1 Ιουλ 2004 · From a brain perspective, the irrelevant speech effect may represent a complex phenomenon that is a composite of several underlying mechanisms, which depending on the working memory load, include top-down inhibition as well as recruitment of compensatory support and control processes.
2 Οκτ 2022 · In summary, our findings argue for the irrelevant speech effect being driven by certain speech-specific characteristics, such as the phonology and changing-state character of the speech sound. They are also informative for weighing the various proposed conceptions of short-term memory.

1 Απρ 2002 · The performance of children and adults on a visual serial recall task with irrelevant sounds (speech and tones) was examined, and theories of the irrelevant-speech effect that include a role for attentional control were better suited to handle the results.
