Amlodipine is a pretty solid drug. In fact, I think it works better than Telmisartan or HCTZ in my case. The biggest actual side effects of Amlodipine is lower leg swelling. If you can't exercise enough, or lose weight and as a result your BP is still high, amlodipine should handle it.

There is a plethora if meds that you can choose from, and whether they work for you or give you adverse side effects is very individualized. As Amlodipine is a calcium channel blocker, you'd want to pair it with something outside of this class, such as an Ace inhibitor, diuretic, etc.
Amlodipine is very good and ameliorate my hypertension close to normal readings.
The doctor recommended me Amlodipine ( not knowing it was a calcium blocker) at the time. It made me violently ill and worse because of thyroid issues. Because I was taking so many different medications, I wasn't sure it was that one.
Adding the amlodipine can help as well since it’s a different drug class, but when there is an aldosterone issue, the drugs mentioned above are far more effective and can work at a low dose in combo with the ARB.
Fyi, if you start to have panic or anxiety after several months it may be the amlodipine. It took 3 different doctors to figure this out in my case. For the first time in my life, I was getting panic attacks; they would wake me up from sleeping!
