yes, avast is safe. the people claiming it’s adware are talking about its scummy upselling tactics, like the popups that attempt to scare you into upgrading to premium. it’s not exactly malicious, just rather annoying.
That's what you want in an AV. No annoying popups, no begging you to buy the premium version, no unnecessary bloat. As long as you have common sense you don't need another AV. If you need to do a scan you can download malwarebytes free.
It is safe, but there are much better alternatives, If you are looking for more protection features though, Avast One has a lot of them open for free. They were illegally selling users data to companies and such but they have stopped it.

It works with Windows Defender just fine; I have both running at the same time. Where I find Avast is better than Windows Defender is that Avast will block and give you a pop up warning when you open up a website that is trying to install malware on your computer.
It depends on you view of it. I still use it because it keeps my machine safe from viruses and malware. It might still be stealing all my data but so are my web browsers, email services, addons, Windows OS, Driver software, and god knows what other apps.
Avast's been my go-to antivirus, and I can vouch for its reliability. It provides good defense against malware and online threats. The privacy protection features give an extra layer of security, and system optimization keeps my PC running smoothly.
