10 Μαΐ 2012 · When I was in elementary school, a teacher informed me that “in England, ‘bloody‘ is a dirty word.” Even at eight years old, this sounded like an exaggeration, the linguistic equivalent of those stuffy Victorians who were shocked by ankles. How could such an innocuous word be a forbidden expletive?
22 Ιουλ 2022 · By one theory, "Bloody" in this context is a contraction for "by our lady", essentially swearing by the Virgin Mary (Bloody in Wikipedia). Other similar oaths include "blimey" (God blind me) and "gadzooks" (by God's hooks (hands)).
According to my parents, the word "bloody" when used as in, "bloody hell!" is considered to be a very vulgar word in Britain. On the order of being as offensive as the f-word would be here in the States.
