Studies show that in people with diabetes, correcting low magnesium levels using magnesium supplementation improves insulin sensitivity and blood sugar control. This is key in preventing damage to organs like the kidneys.
28 Ιουλ 2017 · Magnesium modifies the association between serum phosphate and the risk of progression to end-stage kidney disease in patients with non-diabetic chronic kidney disease
Magnesium impairs the crystallization of calcium phosphate—more specifically, the maturation of calciprotein particles. Considering that phosphate overload causes kidney damage, magnesium might counteract the phosphate toxicity to the kidney, as in the case of vascular calcification.
Randomized controlled trials showed that dietary magnesium supplementation reduces plasma glucose concentrations in patients with pre-diabetes and hypomagnesemia , and improves insulin sensitivity, fasting glucose concentrations, and HbA1c concentrations in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus .
Summary: In case of chronic kidney disease (CKD), renal regulatory mechanisms may be insufficient to balance intestinal Mg absorption. Usually Mg remains normal; however, when glomerular filtration rate declines, changes in serum Mg are observed.
17 Σεπ 2014 · In this study, magnesium deficiency was associated with poor blood glucose control and thus a potential increased risk of subsequent CVD events. In line with this, T2DM is known to significantly increase the risk of ventricular arrhythmias, which represent a serious issue in CKD patients .
