  1. The Islet as an Enclosed Independent Micro-organ: Figure-Ground Articulation. The islet has long been considered an independent micro-organ “embedded” in the exocrine pancreas. In support of this, islets can be enzymatically isolated from the pancreas and respond to glucose and other secretagogues in vitro.

  2. Pancreatic islets are characterized by rich innervation and vascularization, although there are notable differences between rodent and human islets.

  3. Here, we provide a summary of the published work on the anatomy of pancreatic islet innervation, its roles, and evidence for disordered islet innervation in metabolic disease. Finally, we discuss the possibilities offered by new technologies to increase our knowledge of islet innervation and its contributions to metabolic regulation.

  4. 4 Ιαν 2021 · Our evolving understanding of the mechanisms that control islet hormone secretion has led to the development of T2D therapeutic agents that work either wholly or in part through their actions on...

  5. The pancreatic islets are small islands of cells that produce hormones that regulate blood glucose levels. Hormones produced in the pancreatic islets are secreted directly into the bloodstream by five different types of cells. The alpha cells produce glucagon, and make up 15–20% of total islet cells.

  6. 1 Μαρ 2013 · The pancreatic islets of Langerhans were first identified in the late 19th century ( 75 ). As described by Langerhans, the islets are richly innervated ( 75 ), and it is now recognized that this innervation includes sympathetic, parasympathetic, and sensory nerves ( 1 ).

  7. 3 Οκτ 2022 · The islets of Langerhans are clusters of pancreatic cells discovered by Dr. Paul Langerhans, a pathologist who also discovered the dendritic Langerhans cells in 1869. [1] Each islet contains up to a few thousand endocrine cells, and the islets constitute up to 2% of the total pancreatic mass.
