11 Αυγ 2024 · A protection class code is the grade the ISO gives to a home as part of the Public Protection Classification (PPC) program. Protection classes range from 1 to 10. Class 1 indicates the best level of fire protection available, while Class 10 indicates the worst level of protection or none at all.

For each fire protection area, ISO assigns a Public Protection Classification code — a number from 1 to 10. Class 1 represents exemplary fire protection, and Class 10 indicates that the area's fire-suppression program doesn't meet ISO's minimum criteria.

Distance to the nearest fire hydrant also determines protection class. Typically, the rule is that a home must be within 1,000 feet of a hydrant for the lower protection class to apply. See fire departments like Alabama Port and Creola. Single outlet hydrants may not be recognized.
PPC Reports provide the PPC code, alternative PPC and water supply type (if applicable), corresponding fire protection area name for an address, and supplemental information, such as the name of — and the drive distance to — the responding fire station.
Class 1 generally represents superior property fire protection, and Class 10 indicates that the area's fire suppression program does not meet Verisk's minimum criteria. Virtually all U.S. insurers of homes and business property use Verisk's Public Protection Classifications in calculating premiums.
