Fashion in 15th-century Europe was characterized by a surge of experimentation and regional variety, from the voluminous robes called houppelandes with their sweeping floor-length sleeves to the revealing giornea of Renaissance Italy.

In Botticelli’s Portrait of a Young Man (Fig. 1), we see an unassuming brown wool doublet, decorated only with a fine white fringe at the high neckline and down the front.
In fifteenth-century Italy, clothing served as an indicator of one's social and economic status. Most of the female portraits in The Renaissance Portrait From Donatello to Bellini display young women in their best clothing—probably gifts from their new husbands.
