This guideline contains recommendations about general principles for managing intravenous (IV) fluids, and applies to a range of conditions and different settings. It does not include recommendations relating to specific conditions.
24 Ιουν 2019 · Intravenous (IV) therapy is the infusion of fluid directly into the vein of a patient, usually via a cannula. There are various indications for a fluid infusion, including replacement of electrolytes, restoration of blood volume or maintenance in the surgery-staved patient.
To calculate the gtt/min, multiply the infusion rate (mL/hr) by the IV drop factor (gtt/min) found on the IV tubing, then divide by the infusion time in minutes. For example, a fluid that is to be infused at a rate of 75 mL/hr via 15 gtt tubing would infuse at a rate of 19 gtt/min [ (75 × 15)/60 = 18.75 gtt/min].
intravenous (IV) fluid therapy only for patients whose needs cannot be met by oral or enteral routes, and stop as soon as possible. • Skilled and competent healthcare professionals should prescribe and administer IV fluids and assess and monitor patients receiving IV fluids. • When prescribing IV fluids, remember the five Rs:
This guideline covers the general principles for managing intravenous (IV) fluid therapy in hospital inpatients aged 16 and over with a range of conditions. It aims to help prescribers understand the optimal amount and composition of IV fluids to be administered and the best rate at which to give them, to improve fluid prescribing and outcomes ...
