TL;DR kid says IXL was a waste of money because it wasn't used for four years, then gives a review of IXL over the course of four years.
IXL is purely quiz-based, it has some text guides with images showing how to solve each problem type, but often they aren't quite enough to help a kid learn a new problem type. They just add more questions until the kid starts getting them all consistently correct.
We used Study Island for a while at my school but IXL has many more topics, better explanations, and asks better questions. As for parents, IXL gives explanations so it makes it easier for them to help their kids if you assign it at home.

26 Μαρ 2013 · IXL is more kid-friendly in its interface, while Khan Academy's practice questions were a bit too math-major/collegiate in appearance for me. It was also marginally easier to click through Khan's questions and get the right answer without understanding why.
IXL gives teachers easy access to math practice for students. I have used it in my classroom and for small group interventions. IXL practice is broken down into grade levels and by standards which makes finding your topic easy. In my classroom, I would also use it for bell ringers or problems for review games as well.
