James describes the ways of “this world;” the ways of people who focus on achieving and selfishly obtaining what “this world” has to offer instead of what the heavenly kingdom offers believers through faith in Jesus Christ.
Out of the four men named James in the New Testament, only two have ever been suggested as the author—James, the brother of John (sons of Zebedee), and James, the Lord’s half brother. Since the brother of John was martyred very early, about 44 A.D. (Act 12:2), he is ruled out.

The right kind of wisdom, coming from above, is above all “peace loving” (the first specific “fruit of wisdom” listed in 3:17). James then underscores this virtue with his concluding blessing on peacemakers (3:18). The absence of peace, on the other hand, is obviously the main issue in 4:1–3.
Jas 1:4 ἡ δὲ ὑπομονὴ ἔργον τέλειον ἐχέτω, ἵνα ἦτε τέλειοι καὶ ὁλόκληροι, ἐν μηδενὶ λειπόμενοι. ⁴But you must allow endurance its finished job to the end so you will be complete and faultless, deficient in nothing. ¶
