Established on May 14, 1607, the colony gave England its first foothold in the European competition for the New World, which had been dominated by the Spanish since the voyages of Christopher Columbus in the late 15th century.
Jamestown Settlement is a living-history park and museum located 1.25 miles (2.01 km) from the original location of the colony and adjacent to Jamestown Island. It can be reached from the intersection of Jamestown Road (Virginia Route 31) and Colonial National Historic Parkway, on the left when traveling south.
Maps from the 17th and 18th centuries suggest its location, but the exact path of the Road—and where it crossed the Swamp—is unknown. Since the Road was a major part of both First Peoples and English landscapes at Jamestown, tracing its route is key to understanding settlement on the Island.
