The journal reaches out to anthropologists of all specialties and theoretical perspectives both in the United States and around the world, with special emphasis given to the detailed presentation and rigorous analysis of primary research.
JAR publishes substantive, peer-reviewed research articles and book reviews in all subfields of anthropology, totaling approximately six hundred pages of text annually. It sponsors and publishes the JAR Distinguished Lectures by leading scholars in the discipline.
