The spiral curriculum teaching strategy was originally formulated by Jerome Bruner, a cognitive theorist, in 1960. Although many teachers intuitively employed this method, Bruner documented its approach and highlighted its significant value for curriculum designers and student learning.

The Spiral Curriculum. In the 1960s, Jerome Bruner put forward a theory of cognitive growth which looked to the influence of environmental and experiential factors in a child’s education, and which suggested that each child’s intellectual ability develops in stages through changes in how the mind is used.
