In 2021, 2.3 million immigrants came to the EU from non-EU countries. This is an increase of nearly 18% compared with 1.9 million in 2020, but still below the pre-COVID-19 level of 2.7 million in 2019. In 21 out of 27 EU countries, 50% or more immigrants came from outside the EU in 2021.
