In managerial accounting, there are two general types of costing systems to assign costs to products or services that the company provides: “job order costing” and “process costing.” Job order costing is used in situations where the company delivers a unique or custom job for its customers.
One method, known as job order costing, is often used in manufacturing or other process-oriented businesses. Under this system, each job is assigned a unique identifier, and all of the costs associated with that job are tracked separately.
Both job order costing and process costing use categorized cost information to make decisions and evaluate the effectiveness of the cost tracking process. Because of the difference in how each of the two costing systems track costs, different terminology is used.
