Jock Sturges gained notoriety in the 1970s for his evocative nude photographs, often set on the beaches of his native California, as well as on nude beaches throughout Europe. The controversial American photographer is alternately lauded and lambasted by critics, primarily because the majority of his nude works feature adolescent girls as subjects.
The camera and visual pacing—from the opening sand-and-sky sequence to the first signs of human life shown as moving spots detected on an expansive beach—handle light and the human presence in the manner of a Sturges photograph.
