John 5:28-29 Jesus refers to the time of the resurrection when all men will be judged. At the resurrection, both the righteous and the wicked will be brought back to life to receive their reward or punishment.
What does John 5:28 mean? Jesus has already referred to His power over life and death (John 5:21). Part of this power includes the ability to overcome spiritual death (John 5:24), as well as physical death (John 5:25). It also means that Jesus has the right, as God, to judge all mankind at the eventual end-times resurrection (Revelation 20:12).
First, A resurrection that now is (v. 29), a resurrection from the death of sin to the life of righteousness, by the power of Christ's grace. The hour is coming, and now is. It is a resurrection begun already, and further to be carried on, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God.
