Powell was the fourth child of English immigrants Joseph Powell, a tailor, farmer, and itinerant Methodist preacher, and Mary.
He is famous for his 1869 geographic expedition, a three-month river trip down the Green River and the upper portion of the Colorado River, including the first official U.S. government-sponsored passage through the Grand Canyon. Powell was born in Mount Morris, New York, on March 24, 1834, the fourth child of Joseph and Mary Dean Powell.
