SAR Capacity Building in Africa: Working in partnership with IMO. Since 2012, the IMRF, with the IMO Technical Cooperation Division, has been helping key states in Africa to develop a well-functioning SAR coordination capability.
Search and Rescue. The 1979 Convention, adopted at a Conference in Hamburg, was aimed at developing an international maritime SAR plan, so that, no matter where an accident occurs, the rescue of persons in distress at sea will be co-ordinated by a SAR organization and, when necessary, by co-operation between neighbouring SAR organizations.

It caters for both national and international needs in the coordination of distress messages at sea as well as between sea and shore.
Since the crisis in the Mediterranean began to escalate at the start of 2014, over 1,000 merchant ships have so far been involved in migrant rescue operations, assisting with the rescue of more than 50,000 people.
