Ear keloids at their earliest stages appear in two distinct manners: 1. Protruding papule on the surface of ear. This is by far the most frequently observed form of ear keloid at the site of a previous piercing. Therefore, before we expose a large number of young and otherwise healthy individuals to treatments that can be potentially harmful, we need to better understand and to be fully cognizant of all potential short- and long-term side effects of the treatments we are recommending and using.
Common side effects include permanent hypo- and hyperpigmentation, blistering, and postoperative pain [34], and a delay of approximately 3–4 weeks between sessions (approximately three to six sessions are needed) is often needed for post treatment healing [35, 36].
Keloid scars: • are more common after skin injury on the upper chest, breastbone (sternum), shoulders, chin, neck, lower legs and earlobes (especially after ear piercing) • are most likely to form following burns, acne scars and wounds that become infected or where the skin becomes significantly tight whilst healing.
