Tanimoto implored Cousins to help him arrange for his Keloid Girls to travel to the United States and undergo reconstructive plastic surgery on their faces, hands, and bodies. Cousins granted Tanimoto his wish, and twenty-five of those who would most benefit from surgical treatment were selected.
They subsequently went on a highly publicized journey to get reconstructive surgery in the US in 1955. Keloid scars from their burns marred their faces and many of their hand burns healed into bent claw-like positions.
Keloid scars are both physically and emotionally painful. Young women were especially vulnerable because keloids on the face or legs were an obstacle to love and marriage. Many scarred women were plunged into despair by the looks and words they were subjected to by people around them.
10 Δεκ 2019 · Keloids can be treated in a number of ways, including by surgery. Multiple studies now show that while surgical monotherapy associates with extremely high rates of recurrence (50%–80%), postoperative radiotherapy can significantly reduce these recurrence rates.

Before the a-bomb, Hiroshima had a functioning medical system with enough doctors, nurses, and hospitals. In the aftermath of the a-bomb, seven healthcare facilities and many smaller clinics were demolished or left barely operational.
