In this study, we address three types of interviews (structured, semi-structured, and unstructured), and compare them in detail. In addition, we focus on effective ways to form questions, offer a brief review of qualitative sampling, and provide guidelines for conducting an interview in qualitative studies.

There are several distinct types of interviews. Imagine a continuum (figure 11.1). On one side are unstructured conversations—the kind you have with your friends. No one is in control of those conversations, and what you talk about is often random—whatever pops into your head.

Both qualitative semi-structured and in-depth unstructured interviews use verbal communication, mostly in face-to-face interactions, to collect data about the attitudes, beliefs, and experiences of participants.
Interviewing in qualitative research is much like good conversation. It is the process of extracting people’s experiences, describing how they felt about them and how they affected their lives.
